Environmentally Friendly Hummer H-1:

Recently I was hired to move a local artists' project from his studio to a public display area. The art project was a full scale replica of a Military Hummer H-1, totally made out of recycled Styrofoam. This was a joint project funded by the local waste disposal and recycling project in San Francisco. The piece is built out of Styrofoam blocks that the artist found at the local transfer site. Even the wood and pallets for the sub frame are recycled material. The only new materials were the several gallons of liquid nails, a few brackets, wood screws and several large clamps.

When I first saw the vehicle I was concerned about a location to use to secure the project to the carrier bed. After talking with the artist and looking at the sub-frame, I was confident we could load the piece and safely transport it thru the city. I suggested a few things to do to reinforce the piece and agreed to do a "dry run" of the load the following day.

I arrived the following day and began by attaching axle straps to the front reinforced pallet and winching the unit onto the carrier bed. The piece weighed approximately 600lbs. After the piece was on the carrier I raised the palled and placed it on wood blocks to take the weight off of the rolling casters. I then secured each pallet front and back and then used additional straps over the sub-frame to keep everything together.

The piece had been wrapped in shrink wrap to protect the more delicate details and to keep the piece clean. The load went so well that we left the vehicle on the truck and drove it thru the city to my shop and delivered it the following morning to the display site.

I delivered the piece to the Ferry Plaza the following morning. We had to drive the truck onto the plaza early to unload and avoid the pedestrian traffic.

The vehicle was set up with a number of other vehicles from the local city ride share program.

The artist brought along his recycled rock to put with the piece.

The attention to detail was wonderful.

At the end of the day I returned the piece to his studio. Recently I again moved this from his studio to a display at the San Francisco Art Commission.

This piece is available for display or sale and you can reach the artist:
